I promised (to who, I don’t know, nor do I know who would care…) that I would write up a review of the book I recently read, SEO Secrets for 2011 by Mike Monahan, so here we go. First off, I am surprised that I made it through the book with the amount of typos, grammar issues, and the worst part which was all of the editing notes that were left in! I mean, I do not want to sound like a snob, but as an English major in college it really bothered me to see a book make it through the publishing process like this. It was absolutely not edited, I do not know what happened. Well, nobody that I mentioned it to that the book was hemorrhaging errors seemed to care as much as I did, but oh well. All of that aside, Mr. Mike Monahan seems to really know what he is talking about. He just needs an editor…and he really needs one. The book was kind to the non-expert

The book was kind to the non-expert…

as it explained the best tactics for SEO. After having a basic understanding of SEO, I feel like I learned quite a bit of information from the book. If I were a webmaster I would definitely know what to do to propel my site to the upper echelon of search rankings.

…I would definitely know what to do to propel my site to the upper echelon of search rankings.

SEO is certainly intersting, and can be very involved as it seems to be an ever-changing “art”. As far as I am concerned, SEO proves to be a strong marketing tool for businesses both big and small. If I owned a small business, SEO would be my number one marketing priority.

If I owned a small business, SEO would be my number one marketing priority.

In conclusion, if you are the kind of person that does not pull your hair out at a staggering amount of typos, I would highly recommend this book. SEO can be hard to tackle, but Mike Monahan proved to be a true professional, knowledgable, and always helpful in his book that deals and I would feel confident going forward with my own SEO work after reading SEO Secrects for 2011.

I made the trip out to my friend Taylor’s dad’s house last night to hang out and play some music with him and his brothers and had a good time. After messing around for a while we finally got down to business and recorded a song. It is pretty rough, but what can you expect? It’s not that bad for just one night of playing together and practicing to get it down, I think. We’re not going to become rich and famous from it, but it was fun. I guess we settled on Strawberry Jam for our band name for the night, since Taylor and Colton didn’t object…or suggest anything. Anyway, we did a kind of stripped down, psychedelic-ish cover of Tom Petty’s song Last Dance With Mary Jane. Mainly we just slowed the tempo down from the original, which can be seen/heard here:

So here is what we did last night, and what I stayed up until the wee hours of the morning messing with on garage band. I recorded the vocals on a seperate track, along with the harmonica. All I did in garage band was add a little reverb and echo to the vocals, and that’s it, no manipulation of the guitars or drums, that was just us jamming together, no added sounds. So just to clarify, no added effects haha, again just us jamming. Colton sounded awesome slappin’ da bass and Taylor did his best John Bonham impression. I just tried not to mess up and screw the take up and keep those guys up later than they wanted to be, even though it was inevitable. And by the way, we only did two verses of the song just to skip to the fun part of breaking it down and acting like rock stars. If Tom Petty were dead he would be rolling around in his grave with this. Sorry Tom:

Well, it has been a long time. A long time since I posted a blog. I have been busy, so I don’t feel so down about not posting, but it is not what I would have liked to be doing. I have graduated from college and moved away from my town of San Marcos, Texas finally and have been painting with my girlfriend at her grandparents property some hour and a half from San Marcos. We have been paid so far for the work that we have done, which has made a nice difference, but the time has passed that I am completely comfortable not having a job, and consequently not much money. I have been keeping up with twitter and facebook much more than this blog, but I did just get a new book on SEO, “SEO Secrets for 2011″, by Mike Monahan. I feel that since I am no longer taking classes on new marketing and media and such that I need to keep up to date on my own, so this is my attempt at starting self-taught again. So far so good with the book, I will write a review most likely later after I finish it. Here’s a look at the book’s cover, again linked to Amazon Books:

I have finished my final paper for SMWORK, an epic almost-ten page final, over my social media strategy for my personal brand. In summary, it deals with the issues of getting a degree in creative writing and having to go out in this job market today to try and find a job. I explored several different social media outlets that would help me, and tried to remain convinced that, being an educated writer, social media would benefit as well from a person with my specific skill set. I collected research from several different sources, most being writers/authors themselves. Some even described their own personal social media strategies that work for themselves. I have found that there is a community of writers out there in the digital world that are all on the same boat as I am, but they all seem willing to help a brother out. That is an encouraging thing to find out in this cut-throat job market that I am about to be swimming in…

Listenin’ to a new track by the Akron, OH blues-rock champs of fuzz, The Black Keys. It’s fuzzy, its heavy, catchy, and melodic. A little psychedelic too with the tambourine. Any song that can incorporate a tambourine into it is bad-a in my book, and this song definately fits that bill. Needless to say, ‘The Keys’ are oe of my favorite bands, if not my favorite now since the Kings of Leon have gone commerical and lost thier original raw, edgy sound that I fell in love with back in 2003. For all intensive purposes, TBK is pretty big now too…and commercially speaking, well, that too I suppose. I’ve heard TBK songs on TV, movies, commercials, and so on. All that said, their sound hasn’t changed much since the beginning, just a little more polished recording (especially now that famed producer Danger Mouse is a good friend).

But back to the new song…its pretty good, but I’m looking for something with a little more edge. I like it though, i always love the feedback and ambient guitar noises Dan seems to excrete and Pat does his thing too, not very complicated, but extremely complimentary. Dan’s vocals sound great, keeping in line with the last release ‘Attack and Release.’ “My next girl will be nothin’ like my ex-girl” Pretty good chorus, R&B infused delivery for sure. Can’t wait to hear some more, and they better make thier way back into Austin soon. It’s been way too long guys.

The new album, entitled ‘Brothers’, will be out May 18th apparently, released by Nonesuch Records. This will be the 6th Keys album since 2002, a pretty good feat considering recently Dan released his first solo album AND a rock-rap album going by the name BlakRoc. Here is the track listing :

All tracks written by Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney, except where noted.

So here is a photo slide show of some of the things that I incorporate (or will eventually) in my blog. I do a lot of listening to vinyl records, buying them, collecting, ect, Also I like to sit down and play the songs, try to learn them from listening to the records. I have my vintage Epiphone electric guitar that my girlfriend bought for me as well as the Texas Red Fender amp. To round out my electric gear I have a Boss Bluesdriver pedal. I also have a Fender acoustic guitar and an Epiphone mandolin. On top of that I can play a little bit of harmonica, or blues harp, as well. Knowing how to play these instruments really helps in understanding and loving music, especially blues and americana. Also live music is really important to me, though being so close to graduating this year and being busy with work as well I haven’t had as many chances to head out and catch some tunes. Soon though, soon…actually tomorrow night I am going to Emo’s in Austin to see psych-blues band Radio Moscow and Saturday I will be back in Austin at the Frank Erwin Center to see Elton John for the second time! Let the good times roll.

I really believe that the future of social media is alive now, and growing every day. Every day that a big news story breaks we learn a little more about just how big, and important, that social media has become in such a relatively short time. When the story broke that a plane hit the IRS building in Austin recently, with traffic stopped and no clear answer, it was social media that saved the day so to say. If it weren’t for all those people with iphones, and smartphones taking pictures and video from the site, the news story could have been a disaster. Because of the new form of media terrorism was quickly ruled out, and with information traveling so quickly the public got a good grasp of what was going on very fast as well.

So, in my opinion, news is what may benifit most from social media, as least in a positive way. As long as proffesionals can harbor the technology and not abuse it, then social media networks such as twitter and facebook can be very helpful. I am sure that other social media sites and communitites will come out…and fail…but in the end there probably will be at least one or two that will survive and continue to pave the way for future ways of communication.

After watching the videos on the histories of Amazon and Ebay, I think that both are (obviously) great examples of online businesses that have and will continue to strive into the future. They both came out at the right time I believe, with the dotcom business boom of the nineties, both born from simple yet genius ideas. The early history of both those companies is interesting to look at. From watching the video I think that what thier earliest obstacles had to be was the payment methods, namely credit cards. I don’t know exactly, but I can only assume that people had to be hesitant to give that kind of information out over the internet, a new technology that hadn’t been fully explored so to speak. The segment in the video about credit cards made sense, but I know that there are still a whole lot of people out there using the internet that are still wary of putting thier credit card information out on the web. I work at Target, one of the biggest retail stores in the country, and i encounter a ton of customers. For the most part, people are down right paranoid of letting anybody see thier debit card pin number, something that is absoutely useless without the physical card. People do not even want to give out thier driver lisence numbers either, or date of birth. People are paranoid, and I cannot see those same people buying on the internet, they are barely comfortable buying in stores. That being said, internet shopping is bigger than ever I think.

These days, you can buy just about everything on the internet, even groceries so that you never have to leave the house…ever, really. Clearly there are enough people out there willing to give out personal information in order to make thier lives easier. Amazon and Ebay are two companies that are sort of reliant on the people that use the sites. The video said in the early days of Amazon, the founder just kept lowering prices in order to get traffic flow and get the name out there. He was making buying books easier, by not having to go anywhere to find a book, or to get books that are out of print, or rare. Ebay does the same thing, but with just about anything. I think that as long as companies like this, and other similar companies keep making it easier for consumers to find and obtain items or goods that they want then they will be sucsessful.
